Evaluation Question 1

Evaluation Question 1

For question one we decided to make a cribs video that would show where we filmed our music video so that we could go round or location and talk about all of the places where we filmed and how they have fitted or not fitted in with our genres conventions. Also we decided that this would be a good idea because it meant that we could talk about all of the props that we used in our music video. We used lots of hip hop props to make our video look more realistic and we thought that using cribs would be a good way of being able to talk about them.

Draft Poster

I have kept this poster very basic, this is because the easier it is to abstract information of the poster, the more likely you are to take in the information. Also the less writing there is on the poster, then the more likely the audience is to actually read the writing and acknowledge the information. These elements I feel help in terms of effectiveness, and easily gets the message across to the audience. The poster is also similar to the album cover. I have done this to promote a certain theme that can be easily recognised, this would help in terms of marketability and shows that the album is connected to the poster. Another reason I like this poster is because of the red hat also attracts attention from the audience because it stands out in the black and white background, as well as the different fonts creating an original effect. Overall the main principal of this poster is originality and simplicity.

Digipack Draft

Front cover

I believe this album cover I have made really reflects the song. The main reason for this is because the song is out of the normal and so is the album cover. The way in which the album cover looks very simplistic I think makes it look original. All though this cover looks very simple, it was not as easy as it looks and took a long time to achieve. I think the colour are very representative of the song, because the high tempo and big beats give you an idea that the colouring would be quite different, however I have contrasted this with a black background with stars in the background to give the effect that you are in space. I think that these two aspects contrasting are like the song, which lyrics which are quite slow, contrasting with a fast and heavy beat.

Insert (front)

The insert I have also kept very simple as I feel it creates an artistic effect to the whole album cover. By keeping the whole album cover simple it makes you think about how the music on the actual album may be different. The smoke effect that I used in the insert I feel adds a mysterious edge to a simplistic album cover. The way the name 'Grim' comes out of the clouds looks like something similar to a horror film, which again gives it that mysterious edge. The insert can easily be recognised to belong to the album front cover and the album back cover. This is important because if you could not recognise that they fit together, the album cover would look wrong and would look pretty poor.

Music Posters Analysis

This is a poster of Drake for a tour that he has done. I like the simplicity of the poster in terms of how easy it is to tell that it is a poster for Drake and his tour, I also like the Font he has used because it blends in with the photo well. Another thing which could be helpful is the way in which he has successfully made the poster in just black and white, without it looking strange. The picture shot is a mid shot and suits the poster well, his pose is also good and suits his kind of music because lots of his music is about aspiring to be better than you are, and the way he is looking up portrays this. The lighting effect is also very effective even in black and white. However I do not like the fact that it does not attract the audiences attention, and if you were to see this poster in a subway you may not even look at it because it does not stand out at all, and just looks like a normal poster.

Here is a poster promoting one of Kid Cudi's tours. The main reason this poster is effective is because it captures the audiences eye with the strange colouring, and if you were walking past it you would be drawn to look at it because of the weird colouring. The writing is also effective because it is informative and easy to read, and contrasts with the poster. This is effective again because when you look at the poster your eyes are drawn to the writing and you acknowledge what the writing is saying. I also think the poster is reasonably creative, admittedly it's not the most aesthetically pleasing poster but it does the job it's meant to in terms of attracting attention, and is not something that you would usually in everyday life. The colours are the most intriguing and green, red and black are not usually colours that you would see together.

Album Cover Mock Up Designs

On this mock cover, I have not followed the normal conventions of a hip-hop album cover. The main reason for this is that normally Hip-Hop album covers normally use a simple font with regards to the writing, however I have gone for a more artistic font which I think could work well with a better image and a better background colour.

I could improve this cover by using a totally different type of picture, with regards to the camera angle. It could also be improved by using totally different background because I believe this one looks pretty poor.

One good point from this mock up is that it conveys the name black and white because of the colouring, this adds to the 'lonely' idea said in the song.

Album Cover Reasearch

I particularly like this album cover (which is off Kanye west: The college dropout) because it depicts a sad story by the body language of the Teddy bear. The teddy bear is obviously a team mascot and has revieved some bad news, this links with the album title the college dropout. But it's particularly effective because you don't associate a teddy bear with sadness, you associate a teddy bear with happiness and children. I also think the colours are very interesting because you don't really see Hip-Hop album covers with these colours or the border around the main image, so he has pushed the bounderies in terms of what is acceaptable to to with this genre of music and i think this has the potential to influence our album cover massively.

This album cover of 50 cent is another option to inspire us. Although it is completely different to Kanye West's cover, it follows the normal conventions which are associated with the genre Hip-Hop. One of these being a big picture of the artist looking 'gangster' and portrait themselves quite arrogantly which most album covers in this genre do. Although this is less creative as Kanye Wests (above) and doesn't really push creativity at all, it is a good example of how Hip-Hop album covers are traditionally conveyed and could help us with our design of an album cover.

This is another example of an album cover which is pushing album covers in terms of creativity to the limit. What N.E.R.D (originally a hip-hop group have done to there album cover is also shown in there music. They have pushed away from the traditional Hip-Hop music and album cover. There music now has some influences of Blues, Jazz, Tribal and pop music. Therefore they have made an album cover which reflects this, The helmet could symbolise Jazz music because Jazz music was very popular around world war one time. The feathers could symbolise the tribal music which has influence there music, and the man in the picture is pharrell williams, and he himself heavily symbolises creative hip-hop music.

This is the album cover of Wiz Khalifa, Deal or no deal. This is a symplistic album cover which is replicated in his music because it is very traditional hip-hop. The main reason this is effective is the colouring which is tinted into the colour of him and makes him look part of the background, and the background is meant to replify his current city which is Pittsburgh. The reason he is made to look like part of the background is to try and symbolize that he is part of the city, and the city is part of him, although he spent some of his early years growing up in Germany. This aspect of the album cover is something which appeals to me heavily.

From these idea's I think our album cover should have some influences of conventional hip-hop covers by having an artist looking 'Hip-Hop' on the front just like 50 cent, this is to categorise where our music is coming from as we are not an established artist such as Kanye West or N.E.R.D so we can't be as boundless and have to try and stick in the bounderies of traditional hip-hop album covers. However I think we should take influence from Kanye West's teddy bears stance to show vulnerability as our song is about being alone. This could be done by having Josh Grimshaw having a stance similar to the teddy bears stance. We could also use N.E.R.D's representation of the music into the album cover by having a hip-hop/dance background, which the song is. We could also use the colouring of Wiz Khalifa's album because it looks good and purple is not a 'happy' and bright colour and our music isn't bright or happy really.

Twitter

This is the Twitter account we made to promote our artist and our music video. Nowedays social networking sites are one of the main sources of advertisement because it's free and extremely effective because the majority of people now interact with these network sites and can give the artist massive publicity. It is a type of advertisement that has become so common that almost all advertisement companies use it as it doesn't have many negative effects, however bad reviews or other people using these sites to critisise the artist is one possible negative effect. People also use twitter to communicate to their fans, so their fans feel more involved in the famous persons life. It is also a place where artists can say where they ae going and what they are doing, for example an artist could say that they are doing a tour around europe and straight away all there fans would see this and be aware and maybe book tickets to see them, and if this wasn't the case the fans may not have ever heard about the tour.

This is a good idea for us because now all of the fans for Josh Grimshaw are aware that he is releasing a new video, alone this is effective but also fans of Josh Grimshaw may retweet the post, this means that the followers of the fans would also be aware about the new music video and could further publicise our artist. We will get feedback by people sending us messages about the music video, or about anything to do with the music video. This will help us to further improve it and be as good as possible.

Filming Final (Part 1)

Here is me filming the scene where the clothes change in rhythm to the music. This was fairly easy because of the practise we had when doing our first draft, however it still took a lot of concentration to make sure that the actor was in the correct position and not moving about in between the shots. We shot it here because of the plain white background, which is what we were after in this sequence of shots. The fact that we had practised these kind of sequences quite a lot meant that it took a lot less shots and therefore reduced the amount of time spent shooting this scene.

Here we are preparing the bedroom scene and Mikey is making sure the music is correct. This took relatively little time to prepare as the room was fairly basic and there was not much to move around. Our team work made preparing the room a lot easier than it could have been, we all communicated well to each other and did not get frustrated with each other which also made filming much easier. The things that we had to move in this room were things such as lamps, books and clothing. We also had to move a big picture as it ruined the mis-en-scene and did not look 'hip-hop' at all, if we did not move it then it would have made the video look 'dodgy'. In this scene we also had to have Josh looking like he just got out of bed, so he wore his bed joggers and no top as this is more believable than normal clothing.

Here we are shooting the scene in which the actor is looking in the mirror. This again was relatively easy, the only concern was positioning the camera in the most suitable position, so we had the actor in the shot and also have the mirror in the shot so you can see him looking at himself. For the mis-en-scene in this shot we moved almost nothing, this was because wanted the bathroom to look like a bathroom and the best way to do that was to just leave it how it was. However we did move unsuitable things such as women's perfume etc. This scene took a couple of takes though because the actor was struggling to mime the words and pretends to do thing at the same time, however it did not take too many takes and we completed this with not too much time spent.

Here is how the table looked before we decorated it to suite our mis-en-scene we were after. As you can see it is pretty plain which is why we chose it as the place to shoot this scene. There are plain walls which helped us and there are no unsuitable props there that we did not want. The table is also the appropriate width and length to shoot the poker scene on. The room also is a good size so it made positioning the camera a lot easier, and also made moving about and setting the room up a lot easier.

Here we have put the poker matt down, on our draft feedback one of the criticisms was that the matt was not smooth. So in response to this we ironed the matt to make it dead straight with very little creases in it. We also positioned the chips and stuff so they look more realistic. The lighting was also very good in this room and was dark, but light enough to see clearly which helped us give the effect that the poker scene was mysterious and perhaps underground.

We also put football shirts signed and in the background to make it appeal to our target market more. Another thing we did was that we placed beers around the table to make it seem like an actual game of poker, and seem more realistic. We also had to make sure the poker chips where placed appropriately, and that we did not move any chips in between filming the shots. This was difficult considering the length of time it took us to shoot this scene.

Here is how the room looked when it was fully prepared. We did a good job in terms of timing and organisation. We also did a good job in terms of how the room looked, I was very pleased with the outcome of the room and i felt it looked as good as we could have possibly made it. The only negative aspect of this room was the wooden thing on the wall, but this was not shown in the music video and therefore did not effect our music video at all.

This is my view when we were positioned on the music video. You can see a line in the matt from my view, but this was not shown in the music video because of the angle of the camera. As you can see the cards are positioned how they would be in a real game of poker to try and get as much realism in the music video as possible. The beers were also positioned where they would be in a real game of poker, and not in the way of the poker game.

This picture shows where the camera was situated. As you can see it was positioned suitably for the shot. One thing we had to make sure when we were choosing this room was that there was enough room to comfortably fit the camera and have a good view, as well as enough room around the table for the pan shot in the music video. This planning helped us achieve the success that we achieved when it came to shooting our video and not taking lots of time.

Here is us planning our shot sequences. This was a very important part of making our music video and took many hours to actually finish planning the shot sequences. It is such an important part of making the music video because it allows us to plan what props we need to take for each scene, where to shoot the scene, and reduces the amount of time taken to actually film the video. We planned our shot sequence on more than one occasion, which shows good planning but was very time consuming. As you can see we watched the original video of Kid Cudi - Day n Nite so we could plan our timing perfectly which we did managed do I think very well. While planning our music video there were many arguments about what should be done and where which shows that we cared about our final music video. Here we are at school planning in a lesson, but it took much more time than just our lessons to plan the video.

This again is us planning our shot sequences and using the laptop to play the original Kid Cudi song so we can get the timing perfect. Here we were missing Josh Stevens because he was busy, however even though we had one person missing we still continued to finish our shot sequences. We planned this round arran's house because it's near Mikey so he could walk there easily, and I could drive there and was the most convenient place to plan.

Problems

One problem we came upon when planning was that we were planning things that were too complicated to realisticly achieve. This led us to having to re-plan large parts of the music video and was very time consuming. This also meant that we had to re-make the story board which again was very time consuming. Another problem we had was arranging to plan when everyone was free because we all had other commitments, such as coursework, other homework and also leisure activities such as football. However we overcame these difficulties and eventually had the exact story board and shot sequences that we wanted, this took a lot of effort but was a major relief when we finally finished all the planning, and also made filming seem very simple and easy.

Filming Draft (Part 1)

Problems with Filming
One massive problem we have had with filming on day one, Sunday 31st October, is that the tripod we have obtained is damaged and not very stable. This has massive implications when it comes to getting a steady shot and is something we are going to have to act upon. If we do not find another tripod the overall filming quality will be majorly reduced and have a massive impact on the final piece of work.
Another problem was with the weather, although we planned to go out on the day that was most suitable, it still wasn't ideal as we wanted sunshine but got clouds. This problem is something we can't really alter as it is autumn now and can only get lucky with the weather. However we may be able to get around this problem through editing. If we do not somehow find a way around the weather issue, I believe that the quality will again be reduced quite dramatically.
Finally we had a problem with transportation. For me and Josh Stevens to get there we had to catch two buses which took over one hour and a half, this is a problem because it limits the time we can film as the last bus is at 6pm. However hopefully next week one of us will be able to drive, if this is the case it will make filming incredibly easier for the group as we can travel to other places to film.

To take the photo's of us filming I used my phone which is a nokia N97 (pictured left), as it was conveniant and easy to use. It also saved us carrying a camera around with us all the time, which is a problem because it is easy to forget and a hassle to charge and prepare. It has a decent 5mega pixel camera so the quality is not too bad either and has flash for dark places. To upload the photo's I used bluetooth as it was very easy and simple to do and did not require anywires and very little time. I managed to do this because both my phone and laptop both have bluetooth so it was a case of connecting them together and sending the pictures via bluetooth.

Target Market

our target market is generally for people at the age of around 14 to around 30. However most of our target will be in there late teens as these will be the people who take an active interest in new music the most.  This picture is a stereotypical hip-hop fan. As you can see his clothing is very similar to our music video's clothing, and the clothing brand will also be very similar. The target market will mainly consist of males however there will be some females in there too. Our target market also influenced us on how we would advertise our music video. This is because they are very up to date with technology and use social networking sites such as twitter and facebook. They are also into creative posters and good artwork which is why we have tried to create artistic album covers and posters. Research has shown that racial similarity, and shared knowledge both have positive effects on the target market and can have an increased influence on them. This is why we have used 'Grim' as our artist as he is similar to the actual target market. Our target market is fairly broad, this is a good thing because it means our music video will be more successful and have more fans, which means a bigger fan base and easier to sell our music video.

Props

For our music video we have used several props we have tried to stick to a minimal amount of props as they are expensive to get hold of good ones and fake props can have a bad effect on the video. We have used some props however as these were easy to get hold of and we felt they would have a good impact on our music video in terms of it looking realistic. One example of using cheaper props, without loosing the authenticity of using more expensive props is with the cigarettes. Instead of buying the expensive ones we brought tobacco and rizler and made them ourselves, this on it's own saved us a fair bit of money. Another way of reducing cost was that instead of buying things such as the black bag, we looked around our houses and found one which is exactly what we were looking for!

Another way we have kept the props cost efficient is with the clothing. As we all dress similarly to the artists and genre of music we are going for, we have the same brand clothing as the genre. This enabled us to use our own clothing in the music video, however we made sure that the clothing was brand new or was in very good condition, as you don't see music video's with worn out or old clothing in it. We have also borrowed appropriate clothing of our friends to get the best and most suitable clothing possible in a low cost and efficient way. We also had things such as poker chips already and didn't need to acquire any. Props that we have to buy full price are things such as spray cans, because none of us have any.

Location

This is where the opening and a few other scenes for our music video are located, which is an industrial estate in Broughton astley. The black circles demonstrate where the majority of the filming was done. We chose to film on a Sunday so that it was quite, we chose this particular industrial estate because it is in an ideal place and easily accessible.

We had to choose the time we would film after 5pm on a weekday or an a weekend because these are the times the place is not busy and would not have problems with filming due to people getting in the way or driving past etc. We also had to make sure that the weather was ideal for the shots we were going to take, as all the scenes we were shooting on the day was outside. Therefore we looked at the weather report and chose to go on Sunday 31st October as this suited the day best.

Leicestershire weather outlook - 31st October

Generally cloudy with rain spreading into Northern Ireland during the morning and Scotland, Wales and northwest England during the afternoon. Mostly dry elsewhere with some bright or sunny spells. Becoming windy in the northwest.

Other potential days we are looking to film on are Tuesday 2nd November, Wednesday 3rd November and Thursday 4th November. The remaining scenes that we need to shoot are all indoors and the weather will not affect the filming at all.

Pitch Feedback

When we pitched our ideas to our class we were disappointed with the amount of feedback we got regarding what was good and what wasn't so good about our ideas towards the music video we are going to produce. The class seemed to like the idea of having two people playing Kid Cudi to show how he is different at night compared to how he is in the day. The class also liked the song we chose because of the simplistic lyrics and little words, and having an upbeat tempo.

Background Research

The artist whose song we have chosen to remake is Kid Cudi (Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi). He is an american singer, producer and recently started acting. His biggest U.K hit is 'Day and Night' featuring The crookers, which is the song we will be producing a video to. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, America and grew up in shaker heights which is also in Ohio. In interviews he stated how his music and personality has been affected by the fact his father died when he was only aged 11, this is shown in most of his music through a slow beat and gloomy words throughout most of his music. He has also said that his inspirations towards music were alternative Hip-Hop group, such as The Pharcyde and A trice called West.

Mims - Move If You Wanna

I really like this shot because it shows what the artist is wearing and that the clothing or footwear is relevant to the music genre. I also like the way the scene is slowed down, a simple way of inputting a good effect to make the music video appear more dynamic.
This shot is effective because as the lyrics start to talk about the sun and heat, they edited the video  to make it appear as the sun gets brighter and makes the place seem lighter, this, in practise is a very simple editing technique.
This shot interests me because I like the use of lighting to make the environment seem dark and gloomy, after having most of the music video out in the light. The contrast between light and dark is something that we could look to do our music video.
Overall this music video is something that we can take inspiration from, however allot of the video such as the twisting of the body's and the dancing in the background will be almost impossible for us to achieve. The start of the video is impressive because of the way the artist moves quicker by a jump cut, to make the artist move across quicker without making the video look poor.  I also like the theme of going in slow motion throughout the entire video although the music isn't slow it suits it because the at points the lyrics are slow. The way in which the artist is doing things relevant to the lyrics is also very intruiging, such as the laser at around 1.07 minutes into the song.

Lil Wayne - Drop the World

I like this scene because the lighting adds intensity and drama to the music video. I think this use of lighting is extremely effective and very simple. The mis-en-scene is also extremely good because it blends well with the lighting adding a mysterious and dangerous feel to the scene. I also feel the fact that the artist (lil wayne) has his back to the camera and the lightin g makes him look very shady and unknown, again i think this adds to the mystery.

I like this shot shown because it is a simple and cost effective way of adding intensity into a music video, the mis-en-scene on it's own is enough to create a sense of darkness and intensity, but the darkness of the shot also adds to the drama and feeling of mystery.
Overall this music video is a very good video to take ideas from because it has very simple and cost effective ways of adding intensity into a music video. At the start of the music video we see lil wayne walking with a dark background and an interesting mis-en-scene which is the city. The way the camera moves to capture all the mis-en-scene which sets the scene is also very effective and is something I hope to take inspiration from. The clode up's in this music video also add another dimension of effect which adds emotion to the video and fits with the music. The use of different camera angles makes the music video seem alot more versatile and interesting, helping to keep the audience attracted to the video and not get bored. Another simple effect is the way in which the speed is in slow motion for alot of the music video, this fits in with the acrual music which is a slow relaxed song. The way that Eminem demonstrates his emotions by his movement towards the end of the video also helps to show more emotion and intensity in the music video.

Example - Kickstarts

.This scene is effective because of the use of cross cutting, it's such an easy and effective way of editing a music video and making it look good, It is something we will be looking to do in our music video
I like this scene again because of the use of cross cutting in this shot and the way the shoes keep changing throughout the scene is very effective and makes the video look incredibly clever. I also like the way the clothing i.e the shoes are appropriate to the music genre and is something we will be looking to achieve throughout our music video.

This is a music video by Example which are and indie band but has influences of hip hop within it. The music video is quite simple and uses the conventions that Andrew Goodwin has identified is in the majority of all music video's. One of these is that it uses illustrate, which means the video represents the meanings of the lyrics, and genre. Another convention the music video follows is that it amplies the music, this means that the meanings and effects are controlled and constanlty shown throughout the video.

This video is quite a simple video and provides many ideas that could be replicated fairly easily. The video also uses cross cutting, this is where there is more than one shot on the same screen, this is put into use when there are different faces and bodies on the screen

Mood Board

Mood board of all the artists we take inspiration from. These artists are very good examples of who we will be trying to replicate in terms of clothes and appearence, as they all dress to the genre of hip-hop. They are also very good examples of where we will gain inspiration for the music video, they all have a certain attitude which is apparent in all hip-hop video's, which is a very confident almost 'cocky' appearance. This attitude fits this genre because if they aren't confident in there music no-one else will be. We also look to these artists for ideas of what props we will be using.

These artists all have a different style but all are relevant to the video we will be making, for example kid cudi wears crooks n castles where as pharell promotes his own brands such as billionaire boys club, both brands are different but both are ideal for our music video we are going to produce.

These brands shown vary from superdry which is a very mainstream and popular brand which Jerimih is wearing, but not necasserily a brand you would associate with hip-hop, to LRG which wale is wearing and is also a maintream brand but is very much associated with hip-hop and is one of the most popular brands associated with hip-hop. Crooks and castles is also represented in the mood board, which kid cudi is wearing is a relatively underground brand which is becoming more and more mainstream, and is represented in hip-hop not necasserily because it is made for hip-hop but because hip-hop artists are choosing to wear them.

Arran and Josh N's Busted Remake

This was our task in which we had to do a remake regarding the music video by busted called 'this is what i go to school for'.

Pre-Production

Before we started to produce the music video we had to think about many aspect of how to re-enact the video, we had to do a risk assessment and take factors which could potentially damage or harm people into consideration. Things such as wires running on the floor in the dark, footwear when jumping up and down and chewing gum whilst trying to mime the words we had to outline as potential health hazards. We also story boarded the sequence of the film, which helped us a lot during production because we could then just refer to the story board if we got confused, on these story boards we also drew pictures, so we could visualize how it will look when producing the video. Another thing which was important during in pre-production was that we wrote down the props and dress codes which in this case was school uniform and guitars so we were better prepared when it came to the prodcution. We watched through the original Busted video 'that's what i go to school for', which we re-enacted a lot of times so we thoroughly understood how to shoot each shot.
Production

When producing the video we had to make sure the timing was in sync with the song, this took many shots to get right as things such as people mistiming or laughing would make the scene completely wrong. We also found that it is very hard for someone to pretend to play a guitar when they have no idea how to play one; this makes the scene look completely wrong. Another thing we found during production is that it is hard to get people to go in the background and dance because it causes them embarrassment; however scenes where people had to smile at the camera or walk past were successful because it was less embarrassing. We also found that when there are three different main members it is difficult to get them to go together and be on time, which makes us have to shoot more and more scenes whilst the background people get disorientated and loose enthusiasm. One thing which is essential is that we needed to play out the music whilst shooting each scene so that people knew when to say there lines. Another problem we encountered was the lighting, at some point it was too dark.

Post-Production

During post-production we had to do a lot of editing which is very time consuming, during editing we found it very difficult to get the music and mouth movement timing spot on and in sync, we also found that some of the ‘band members’ didn’t emphasize the words enough so it didn’t look realistic at all. We also found that when we were filming there were some people in the background that shouldn’t be there which destroyed the mis-en-scene.  We also found that the alotted time didn't allow us to re-shoot some of the clips which should have been re-shot. I also found that the video editing software was very basic and didn't allow us to edit it the video in an effective or quality way.
