Katy Perry Ft. Snoop Dogg - California Girls
I chose California girls due to the fact I seen the video before and it is quite good to analysis the media concepts used in it and the effects it gives using all the different types of concepts to the audience. The context which was in the video and in the music was all about how good California was and the whole song was making California out to be amazing; the lyrics kept saying “California girls” which stats to the men that the girls in California are very gorgeous and beautiful making the men assume that the place is perfect. This would influence the men to go and visit California and see if it is as good as Katy Perry made it out to be in the video; also it was a fairytale world in the video therefore saying to the audience California is not like anywhere else and you have to go. But it did not just influence men it influenced the women as well; as it shows in the video the women seem to have loads of power in it and at the end it shows snoop dogs body in the sand and his head just above it; this shows girls have a lot of power in California which same girls may not have in their state therefore wanted to visit California to see if it is actually like that. In the whole video everything is over reacted and made out to be some perfect city so the conventions they have used in the video are all perfect; for example the sweets; influences children to want to come over due to the fact there is sweets in the video, also fairytale world is a good convention they used within the video shows the audience that California is like a fairytale world. The genre of this song would be pop and all the conventions of this is over reacted therefore creating in my view a video of lies.
The audience they wanted to aim this song and video at are in my view men who like beautiful women and gorgeous girls half naked, women who want more power over men and children who want to eat the California sweets, all these are the audience which they aimed to attract to this song. This is a typical pop music video as it lets the men or women imagine something in the video and link it back to what they want for example men and half naked women. The video in my view assumes to me that the people watching it are “pervs” and just want to see gorgeous women everywhere therefore attracting them to this city; men could take offence to this as it is stating that men only care about women half naked. In this video it seems like they assume you are a typical stereotype of a male figure who cares about women more than anything in his life; I reckon the makers assumed you are middle class and can afford to go to California to see what it is like, young age 25 and under, male gender and American/English ethnicity; all this is assumed by just watching the video and listening the words of the song.
The video assumes you have a big interest in women from the go till the end of it; this may not be relevant for the whole audience therefore just judging on what some men think and believe in therefore not fair stereotyping all the males who watch the video just want and think about women. This in my case is quite relevant because I do like the video and do like girls therefore it draws me in watching this video and I fit in with the typical male mind, but on the other hand some people may not agree with what Katy Perry is trying to say. The knowledge it takes for granted are that every male thinks the same and that makes the video have a smaller target audience as many men out there are gay, married or very old therefore decreasing them out the dream world. If I had to resemble an ideal reader the video is saying you are would be; a male in his 21-25 who enjoys a lad’s night out, loves seeing the ladies and enjoys partying, he has to have a lot of fun inside him that is what the ideal reader would be for the video.
The music video expects from the audience to believe that California is an amazing and once in a life time place to go to; it expects to by the end of the video state that the California girls are all beautiful and gorgeous who live there and also how powerful they are and take nothing from the men out there. The dream end response Katy Perry wanted to get across to the audience is that to her California is the place to be and she is trying to convince you to agree with her via the video and showing you a quick tease to her what California is like. There is not much negotiation that can be talked about in the video she is just showing you what in her mind California is like and trying you to make you think that way as well; she invites you to join her in her thoughts but does not force you. If you don’t think that way you can still watch the video which is very good and opens the target audience; but at the end she wants most of the audience to believe and want to visit the California she has made it out to be in the video. she did not force the audience to think in the way she expected but she would like them to; therefore as I have already said making it out to be the place of perfection and including concepts in the video which opens the audience minds and makes them believe and think about the place she is singing about; she does not force the audience to opens their minds to perfection and how perfect she sees the city. Overall the music video is very typical as half naked girls is often uses in every music videos to attract the males to watch it; the video on the sense of fairytale is different and has done in my view a very effective and amazing video which shows a perfect world and opens are mind to what California could be like if we have never been.
